We went to worship this Sunday morning at The Christian
Church (Disciples of Christ) in Savannah, which is now nested in Asbury Memorial
United Methodist Church. The former
meets at 10 am in the latter’s fellowship hall to discuss the four lectionary
texts for the day and concludes with communion.
Then they join the Methodists in their worship service. Kay and I went to both. Ironically, the Methodist pastor was away on
sabbatical and in place of a guest preacher, they had a video sermon by
Franciscan Richard Rohr. He is founder
of the Living School for Action and Contemplation. I know that because I wrote a letter of
support for a student applying for admission there (New Mexico) this fall. She is one of a small percentage of
applicants accepted. It is a small
world, especially when the Church finds its connections.
We chose to worship in Savannah today because one of our congregation’s
members is a key participant there (She was ill at home today) and another has
served as their pastor. Also, I am on
the New Church Commission for the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in
Georgia and this is one of the new congregations for which I am a liaison to
the Commission.
We stopped by home in Guyton on the way back to Lake Eureka
and loaded up some more stuff to make the house of our gracious hosts a home
for two weeks.
The journey with Bonhoeffer challenges me to spend more time
intentionally in scripture and prayer. I
spend time there professionally, preparing for and preaching and teaching. I write and lead lots of prayers. But
DB
says that when preachers and teachers read scripture we should hear it
personally, God’s Word for me personally today, not just to come up with a
sermon thesis or title.
Kay and I both have spiritual time but we are planning to
spend some of that time together on a daily basis. We will each still do our own things but find
time and resources in common. We had a
long talk about this. We will practice
tomorrow.
