Day 20, August 22
After breakfast and our morning devotional and prayer, Kay
and I went for a walk on the Christmount grounds. We each wanted to share some spots and things
we had learned about the campus. I took
her to the children’s playground where I had spotted the Heron on consecutive
days. On the way we passed a swing set
that Kay had to try. We went past
butterflies on bushes, RV campgrounds, historical sites, and worship centers to
a bridge over a mountain stream that Kay had found sacred in a previous visit.
It was a beautiful day, considered hot here, but mild by our
experiences. Since no rain was in the
forecast, after lunch we decided to travel about 20 miles toward Lake Lure and
Chimney Rock Park. The elevator that
goes to the top of the granite monolith was out-of-service. Undeterred, we took the 480 steps to the top
resting at many spots to see the opening vistas, trees, flowers, and other
panting tourists including a student from SCAD (Savannah College of Art and
Design) and his grandmother.
We returned tired from all the walking. After supper we each took time for reading
and writing.
Speaking of steps, Dietrich Bonhoeffer (DB) reminded me that
the first step is crucial in becoming obedient to the commands of Jesus. The first step of obedience led Peter away
from his nets. Wisdom says that a
journey of 1,000 miles begins with a first step. Let us turn to Jesus and begin with first,
small steps.
